What Is VASAP And Who Needs Approved Providers?

VASAP stands for the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program.

It’s the official state program that manages all the court-ordered evaluations, education, and treatment for alcohol or substance-related driving offenses.

You'll be referred to a provider like us if you're in Northern Virginia (Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, etc.) and have been convicted of a DUI/DWI, or if the DMV requires it for license reinstatement.

We are the "approved provider" who performs the clinical assessment, provides the required education or treatment, and crucially, reports your compliance back to the court.

Your VASAP Assessment: What to Expect

We’ve streamlined this. Here’s how it works with us.

  1. Call Us. This is the first step. Call our admissions team and tell them you need a "VASAP evaluation."
  2. Gather Your Docs. You’ll need a valid photo ID, your court order or referral paperwork, and your insurance card, if you have one.
  3. Schedule Your Assessment. We prioritize these and can often get you in quickly.

What Happens During the Assessment?

The assessment is a one-on-one, in-person, interview-based discussion with a trained therapist that lasts about 60-90 minutes.

We'll discuss your substance use, history, triggers, and the legal consequences you're facing.

The purpose is not to judge; it's for our therapist to determine if there is an underlying alcohol-use or substance-use disorder that needs to be addressed.

After Your Assessment: The Two Paths

Your therapist will make a clinical recommendation based on your assessment. There are two common paths:

Path 1 - Education (ASAP Day Group)

If there is no identified use disorder, the therapist may determine you would benefit from education and counseling classes.

  • Program - These recommendations are typically for our ASAP Day Group.
  • Insurance - Insurance does not cover these classes, as they are considered a consequence of a legal action.

Path 2 - Clinical Treatment (IOP/OP)

If there is an identified disorder or addiction, treatment recommendations are made. This is a medical problem, and our team will create a plan for you.

If recommended for any program, we encourage you to start as soon as the next group meets. This keeps you moving forward and shows compliance with your legal requirements.

VASAP & DUI Program FAQs

How long does a VASAP evaluation usually take?

The evaluation itself is an in-person interview that lasts about 60-90 minutes.

What documents should I bring to the evaluation?

The most important thing is your court order/referral paperwork. You'll also need a valid photo ID and your insurance card (if you have one).

Are telehealth VASAP sessions accepted?

Our initial assessments are conducted in-person to ensure a thorough evaluation. Please call our office to discuss any specific needs.

What happens if I miss my appointment?

We get it, life happens. But for court-mandated treatment, consistency is key. We require 24 hours' notice. Missing appointments without notice can result in a fee and, more importantly, could be reported as non-compliance to VASAP.
