Is Drug Addiction the Same as Alcohol Addiction?

There is a common misperception that some addictions are more “serious” than others, that alcohol addiction isn't as serious as an addiction to heroin, crack, or methamphetamine. 

Common stereotypes paint images of alcoholics getting drunk at home and heroin addicts as engaged in criminal behavior, unemployed, homeless, or giving up on life. After all, alcohol is a legal and socially acceptable substance here in the U.S. Thus, it is perceived as less serious.

As we gather to celebrate the holiday this weekend, many of us will reflect on what we are thankful for.  For those who struggle with substance use disorders and for their loved ones, it can be hard to find many things to be thankful for.  Substance use disorders (more commonly known as addictions) are devastating illnesses to many Americans.  At Aquila Recovery, our mission is to help those who suffer from addictions to achieve recovery and live a healthy life.  While there is always more work to be done, it is good to reflect on what we are thankful for.
